Hello Chip.

In August, ACU will roll out EMV Chip Cards on all ACU Visa debit and credit cards. EMV is a global standard for cards equipped with computer chips and the technology used to authenticate transactions. In the wake of large-scale data breaches, we are migrating to this new technology to protect our members and reduce fraud. You will be able to use your chip card anywhere Visa is accepted.

Q: I’m not sure I’ve seen a chip-activated Visa terminal. Is there anything different about how I will pay using my new card?

A: More merchants are transitioning to chip-activated terminals every day. The process to use your Visa card will only be slightly different than usual. First, you will insert the chip end of your new ACU Visa card into the terminal with the chip facing up and follow the prompts on the screen. Then, remove your card from the terminal when prompted and take your receipt. At a restaurant, a terminal may be brought to your table.

Q: Why do I need to leave my new EMV Visa card in the terminal?

A: While your card is in a chip-activated terminal, the embedded chip creates a unique transaction code. This prevents stolen data from being fraudulently used. If you remove your card too soon, your transaction will be canceled.

Q: Can I still swipe my new ACU Visa card to pay?

A: Yes. In addition to the embedded chip, your new card will also feature a magnetic stripe on the back. If a merchant does not yet have the chip-activated terminal, you can still swipe your card to pay.

Q: Will I still be able to access my ACU Visa card at an ATM?

A: Yes. You will be able to use your EMV Visa card at any ATM just as you have before.

Q: How will my new chip card protect my information?
A: Every time you use your new credit or debit card at a chip-activated terminal, the embedded chip generates a unique transaction code. This prevents stolen data from being fraudulently used.

Q: Will my new ACU EMV card also be an RFID card that is vulnerable to being skimmed and used for unauthorized purchases?

A: No, your new card will not be an RFID card and will not transmit your card data from your purse or wallet.
