Turkey Shoot: A Tradition of Giving and Golf

As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, the anticipation for America’s Credit Union’s (ACU) annual Turkey Shoot Golf Tournament builds. This beloved tradition, held at the Eagle’s Pride Golf Course on Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), has a rich history of community support and camaraderie.

The Turkey Shoot Golf Tournament was established in 2000 by ACU with a mission to support local service members and their families during the holidays and throughout the year. The tournament’s name, “Turkey Shoot,” reflects its timing around Thanksgiving, a season of giving and gratitude. Over the years, this event has become a cornerstone of ACU’s charitable efforts, raising over $720,000 to date.

Why November?

Choosing November for the tournament is a deliberate nod to the challenging conditions faced by our soldiers. Playing golf in the unpredictable Washington weather serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by service members every day. This symbolic gesture underscores the tournament’s deeper purpose: to honor and support those who serve our nation.

Growth and Impact

From its humble beginnings, the Turkey Shoot has grown significantly. The 20th anniversary in 2020 marked a milestone, raising over $30,000 despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This year also saw the establishment of the ACU Foundation, further solidifying the tournament’s role in supporting JBLM charities.

In 2023, the tournament raised an impressive $45,000, benefiting organizations like Santa’s Castle and the JBLM Fisher House. These funds helped provide Christmas presents for soldiers’ families and support various other charitable activities on JBLM.

Community and Participation

The Turkey Shoot is more than just a golf tournament; it’s a community event that brings together local businesses, golfers, and military personnel. Each year, participants and sponsors contribute to the tournament’s success, fostering a spirit of giving and appreciation for the military community.

This year’s event promises to continue the tradition of support and camaraderie, with the goal of surpassing previous fundraising achievements. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or a first-time participant, the Turkey Shoot offers a unique opportunity to give back to those who serve.

Join us in celebrating this remarkable tradition and making a difference in the lives of our service members and their families. Together, we can ensure that the spirit of giving, and gratitude remains strong for years to come.
